News From the Nursery

Didn't matter if it was Labor Day or not; babies don't get a break on holidays. We had about 48 babies to draw for labs this morning.

We run short staffed on holidays like most health care institutions. Our overnight person had a car break down which is why I got called in to work this morning. At least I didn't have to pull an 11-7:30 shift. I worked from 4-8 and then came home and went back to bed.

Another bell rang for the newest angel who got his wings. We lost a little one a day or two ago. Poor boy was born, full-term, but not breathing. He was, for all practical purposes, already dead and only after the medical team worked on him for over 20 minutes did they manage to revive him.

It's sad to say that it was far too late by then. The boy was put on life support, but he never showed any sort of response to stimulation of any sort. It was a true case of being kept alive by machine and by machine only.

His parents had to make the decision on Friday. They had not arrived by the time I left, and the whole floor was dreading their arrival. The mood was somber and very subdued all day. I do hope that he left us easily; I also hope that there might be a chance that his parents were gracious and loving enough to donate his organs if any were viable in that situation. But, I'll never know, and I won't ask unless I overhear something that allows me to question.

Blessings to you, wee angel.

And, please say a little prayer for the baby who was born this morning. This child was born with a hernia, not uncommon for a baby at all. Sadly, though, this particular hernia had pushed up through the diaphram and had allowed the intestines to push against the pulmonary cavity, preventing the lungs from developing. In truth, I don't know if that baby will be with us by morning from the sounds of things today.

I'm waiting for the next Warrior Baby to steal my heart away. I hope it happens soon, for I love having someone in particular to root for! And, I'm thinking that you who read this like having a Warrior Baby to cheer on, too! Who knows? Maybe we're a part of why our last WB made it home so fast!

Prayers are said for the little angels and their families.

You are such a blessing to them Kate. You have earned your wings.

I couldn't do what you do Kate. *Hugs* to you for being the strong person you are =)

I always enjoy having a little one to cheer on and I like to think that the extra is helping in some small way.

Prayers for the ones gone and more for those still here

*hugs*

My heart and prayers go out to the WB's who didn't make it, and their families. How sad. :-(

You are someone I look up to and admire greatly Kate. Bless you for what you do!
