Weirdly Under the Weather

Somehow I've managed to get sick. And, I'm not certain when or how. I've been pretty much flat on my back for the last two days, constantly running a fever between 99 and 102. Wears a body right out.

What's odd about this is the only thing I did that I can even think of is something that has no rhyme or reason. Remember in January when I ended up in the ER with some weird respiratory thing that made my throat shut? And, they couldn't find anything wrong?

When they were doing their medical history, they asked me if there was anything that I'd done that was out of my normal routine. Well, yeah, there was. The night before I'd made myself a couple of hazelnut martinis.

The medicos didn't think that that would have been the cause of whateveritwas.

So, I put it out of my mind and we forge ahead to now. I went to a cocktail party on Friday night; Martinis were the drink of choice. I was only there for a little bit, so I played it safe and had a chocolate martini...okay, so I had two. *grin*

Then the birthday boy mixed himself an expresso/hazelnut martini. We tasted it all around, and a little later that evening, I found some more of that in my glass. Of course, it was so yummy I drained the glass. Didn't think a thing about it.

But Saturday morning I felt lightheaded and nearly passed out at the bedside of my first couple of draws. I made it through the day, but by the time I got home I was chilling and figured a fever wasn't far behind.

I ended up calling in on Saturday night for Sunday, and again today. I can't get the friggin' fever to break. I've had to pull out the albuteral inhaler and use it to keep my throat open, too.

So...I'm suspecting a reaction to hazelnuts. It can't be the martinis - I've not had any reaction to other flavors. So, I guess it's time for some Internet research, huh?

Is there real nut oil in the flavoring they use in a hazelnut drink?

I'd wonder too at the coincedence of both reactions Kate. Hope your 'net searching can find some possible answers!

Allergies can be very dangerous as you know. Personally I won't touch a currant since the reaction I had when I was 15. Might I suggest you may need to avoid hazelnut or at least the hazelnut syrup. Had any reactions to hazelnut in other forms like creamer or such?

Whatever it is, get thee healthy.

In answer to your question, Torch, no, I've not suffered any ill effects from hazelnuts in candy or even in some of the coffee "treats" I indulge in occasionally.

My brief foray on the 'net revealed that people who have hay fever are more likely to be allergic to hazelnuts. Since I only started with hay fever a few years ago, that might make sense. And the article also said that sometimes the nuts, when heated lose their "allergicness" if that makes sense. At any rate, no more hazelnut martinis for me - and I'll be paying closer attention to things I eat that might contain the things!

Yikes! Anything that closes up the throat has to be awfully darn scary! I'd say stick to beer Kate. *wink*

I hope you're feeling better fast!
