Deer Hunting, Truck Style

Yup, went deer hunting last night. Didn't really mean to go, it just happened. Most sensible folks would undoubtedly go during the daylight hours, but hey, I never said we were always sensible.

We were taking a shortcut to the interstate. It's a lovely road, well known for its wooded area, which, of course, the builders are developing into high-end wooded lots and displacing the local wildlife for an entirely different kind of wildlife.

The words, "It'd probably be a really good idea to watch out for deer" had barely left my mouth and THUNK!...out of the ether unseen by mortal man appeared a deer. She came up from the driver's side and the first we saw her was when her body appeared in front of the passenger side headlight. Robert was putting on the brakes, and had slowed to about 35 mph. I'm yelling, "Holy SHIT!" and waiting for the bump of the wheel over the body.

It never happened. I saw nothing on the side of the road. Zip. Zero. Zilch. Damage inspection showed absolutely no damage, not even a crack in a turn signal. Hell, there wasn't even a single deer hair to be seen.

Both the deer and the truck were damn lucky. And, I'm happy that I didn't get to experience an airbag blowing up in my face.

After our errands were done, we headed home, being overly cautious, as you might guess.

We get about a half mile from home and Robert hits the brakes once more. I'm rubbernecking back and forth looking for another deer.

Then I spotted it. It was waddling across the road.

"Robert. If you feel the urge to hit something with your truck, stick with the deer you've already gone after. Do not hit the black and white creature crossing the road. DO. NOT. HIT. THE. SKUNK."

The skunk part was so funny I laughed out loud.

We have a lot of deer around here and have to be careful as well.

I'm glad no damage occurred to either yourselves or the deer. And good for you for letting Pepe continue his crossing unsquashed! LOL

Lainie, I'm not sure exactly where you're at, but you're not all that far from Flo, are you?

As much as I've traveled around Flo and TW's area, and have seen deer in the woods near TW's house, when he hit one a few months ago, I have to admit that I was astounded. Didn't matter that I'd *seen* the creatures, I was still surprised to think about deer being in that area! Duh!

And, Trace, the only good thing that there might have been had the skunk been squished is that it wasn't MY car! LOL! (Well, other than that I hate to see anything get hit by a car!)
