Pain 101

The first of the major dental work appointments was today. I'm in agony in the aftermath.

It wasn't so bad after the novacaine/lidocaine or whatever took effect. But, before the numbing agent did its magic, I had a full blown panic attack, necessitating the poor worker to pull the needle out more than once.

I had talked to them about nitrous oxide at my previous visit and was told it was available. But, they didn't chart that and I had to make kind of a big deal about it to get them to use it. Once we got past that hurdle and they got it started, they were able to proceed with the work.

Unfortunately, because of the lack of charting my need for nitrous, and taking extra time with the numbing agent and panic attack, she wasn't able to get the intended amount of work finished in this session.

So, now they've scheduled two to three hours for my next visit. The other option was to only work on one quadrant of my mouth per visit, necessitating three more visits.

The heck with that. They'd better get it all done in the next visit. We're on a timeline here and can't fool around. Besides, I'm fairly certain my insurance company will take a good look at payments that seem a bit out of the ordinary, such as four visits instead of two...

They assured me that next time they'd be ready with the nitrous in the room, so I could utilize it right away instead of taking a good half hour to even get it in the room.

It's a good, cheap drunk, and I'm very happy when I'm sucking that stuff into my system. Wish I could buy it for home use!

And now, back to my regularly scheduled ibuprofen and ice packs.

Youchies! Is this laughing gas you're talking about?

I sure hope they get it all done in one sitting next time. I hate dentists (but I go every 6 months to save what teeth I have left after manymanymany years of neglect) and the worst part is when I have to go more than once for something!
