Just heard a news bit on television about some sort of birth control that is supposed to completely eliminate a woman's periods.
I haven't taken the time to research this in any way, shape, or form.
But, my initial response is that this form of birth control is WRONG.
Why?
Two reasons: One - I believe that our society is making birth control a "convenience"; why should a member of the female species have to put up with that monthly *curse*?
There's also a bitter part of me that says that some man invented it because he's inconvenienced by women being on the rag...
But, the second, and more important reason I'm against it is because I feel that we are doing the marvelous creation of the human body a grave disservice - we were designed to have those periods monthly as part of our overall cleansing mechanism - a chance to freshen up the 'baby carriage' for the next potential tenant; a chance for hormones to get re-synchronized, and so forth.
Yes, and it's even a break for women from men, and vice-versa. In ancient times, women went to "The Red Tent" or similar designated place during their moon times. It was a time where women had time to just be with other women, to laugh, cry, discuss their troubles, sing, dance, and *relax* from every day stress.
Middle Eastern dance (belly dance) was invented in the red tents. Not to entice or seduce men as many people think, but to work the muscles that were important in bearing children. How else do you think women could drop back from a wandering tribe, have a baby, and rejoin the rest of their people? They were in shape!
A real man is not disgusted by his wife during her time of the month.
It may sound that I'm against birth control. I'm not. Gods knows I'd have both sides of a football team if such a thing as birth control had not come to be. And, birth control has made it possible for many things such as easing bad periods, or giving people the opportunity to choose when they want to have a child instead of having a pregnancy forced upon them.
But, c'mon. Let's quit mucking about with science to the nth degree. Not enough has been done to find out what the long term effects are with something like this. I mean, after all, once upon a time we didn't think cigarettes would cause any harm. Why do we want to take a chance with the children of our future generations?

Birth control in any kind of form has always made me sick. The pills make me nauseaus, the shot gave me migraines and I bled for months at a time. condoms.... yep, allergic to those too (ouch!). So birth control for me was always about education and timing.
While the idea of not having to deal with "Aunt Flow" is appealing.... it doesn't seem right to me.
Interesting.
Almost every woman I know of has greeted this with cheers. I know of TWO women who wanted to go into Chemistry and Medicine specifically to find a way to get rid of their monthly cycles...
You two are the first two I've seen on the other side of the fence...

I don't mind the monthly. It can be annoying and inconvenient at times, but it's just part of life.
My sister-in-law was on birth control for so long that when she and her hubby finally decided to start a family she was unable to concieve. (They had to go through all the fertility shots, pills, etc to have their daughter.) The docs said that it was because she'd been on b.c. for so long it permanently messed up her body.
I've heard lots of stories like that too Tracers, and it's sad for them.
I can't say that I wouldn't have enjoyed missing out on periods (once I knew I wasn't going to have babies) as mine were so damn debilitating. It's been 5 yrs. now and I'm FREE!! However, I think my common sense would have made me too scared to try and alter my body this way. There's got to be some kind of repercussions.
As for birth control in general, it's a good thing for women to be able to "decide" when and if they want to rear children. What I DON'T agree with at all is when women use abortion as a birth control tool. That just makes me spitting mad. Close your damn legs if you don't want to get pregnant, but if you choose not to keep them closed and get pregnant, give one of the gazillions of childless couples out there a chance to adopt.

That's because we're smarter than most women...PFFTT!
There's no doubt about it, the monthly things are sometimes inconvenient, messy, and just about any negative you can say about them. But there are a lot of women whose cycles are simply a day or two of minor bleeding, then they're done.
I was *never* that lucky! There were many days I missed work because of the thing, many days when I couldn't schedule appointments because I just couldn't be away from the bathroom and my stash of paper products, etc., but until women are actually educated about the miracles of their own bodies, they are going to want the convenience of no periods - after all, the onset of menses simply means a woman can get pregnant to most of them. Eliminate periods and let the games begin!
We've become such a instant gratification country...
Anyone want a turn at the soapbox?
