A few days ago I posted about a St. Bernard puppy who was reportedly beaten by some young people and died as a result of its injuries.
However, today's paper elaborated on the story, and it's my opinion that this can be considered far worse.
You see, it's bad enough to think that a people would make a decision that it was a okay to beat another living thing to death, but (playing devil's advocate, here...I'm not trying to excuse this in any way!) it could be a complete, spur-of-the-moment idea. It could also have been something that peer pressure had a part in, with other participants going along with it for a variety of reasons. This doesn't make it permissible, of course!
I'm simply trying to think of some reasons something like this could happen.
But, if today's update is on the mark, it is far, far worse in my opinion. According to the vet who cared for the dog, the beating diagnosis was made on the basis that suddenly the puppy could not use its back legs. The vet, however, could not find any bruises or broken bones to support the theory that the pup was beaten.
Autopsy results showed the pup was poisoned. By antifreeze.
Most dog owners know that antifreeze is fatally attractive to dogs. You see, it's a sweet substance and most dogs cannot resist drinking it down. So, giving the puppy antifreeze is pretty much a fatality waiting to happen unless it's diagnosed, and quickly. You can read about antifreeze poisoning here.
It's worse because now this incident has changed the scenario. Before you could think that it was possibly one of those random, spur-of-the-moment things that a group of kids might do. If they intentionally brought antifreeze to that pup, it was premeditated. They had to KNOW that antifreeze was potentially fatal, and they did it anyway.
Why? What makes people think this kind of thing is okay?
If someone is found to have done this, I hope there's a suitable punishment to fit the crime. And, I hope whatever court hears the case doesn't believe in just a slap on the wrist. They deserve a great big book of justice dropped on them.

So, let me get this straight, they're saying the kids gave the dog antifreeze? Or the dog died from antifreeze and they're not sure if the kids gave it to the animal?
I had a dog that was killed by antifreeze. And I'm 95% sure I know who did it. In December of '86 he dognapped my dog, took him 45 minutes away by car and dumped him. Luckily some nice people found him, called the police in the city where he was licensed, and then willingly brought him back to us at 1am. With a quick vet visit the next morning, he was affected but treatable. He was doing quite well - no kidney failure, just a bit less energy. Then, the following October, the same dude was seen in my neighborhood....and suddenly my dog got a whole lot worse. We had to put him down when he couldn't walk anymore. I really hope the dude got what he deserved.
Wordwitch I'm so sorry to hear about your dog, that's too sad.
I'd like to know if these kids gave this dog the antifreeze or not too Kate. Do you know?
When the original story came out, the dog's owner said that he heard his dog howling and he saw some teenaged kids running away from his property. He found his dog unable to walk at that time. The dog was taken to the vet's office, and was checked for bruises and broken bones because of the dog's inability to walk.
The vet knew something wasn't adding up, and when the pup died an autopsy was performed, which showed the telltaile signs of crystalization in the brain.
I honestly don't know if the kids gave the dog antifreeze. The article was really vague about that. I'm making an assumption that since they didn't let the kids off the hook in the report, they may think they have something to do with it. But, it just seems odd to me that a pup goes down after a bunch of kids are messing around and no one knows the kids, or anything.
I'm sure if it turns out the whole thing was a hoax, we'll hear about it.
Wordwitch, I'm so very sorry to hear about your dog. I saw a couple of dogs treated for antifreeze poisoning when I had my grooming shop at the vet's office and believe me, a drunk dog is a pathetic sight. But it saves their lives when caught in time!
There is a special place in Hell for those who torture animals.
Personally, I'd like to do my best to make sure they get a taste of it before they end up there.
