Weird weekend

Saturday just SUCKED.

It was my weekend "on", so I rolled out of bed at 4:30, and headed out to start my Jeep at 5:00 a.m. It was -10 plus wind chill here, and the Jeep wasn't really crazy about starting, but finally turned over. When I backed out of the driveway, the snow that had fallen the day before had totally solidified because of the cold temperatures, and so of course, I also got stuck on the ice. Four wheel drive is, of course, useless on ice.

So, my start to the day was almost running late. But, on weekends we get to park in the ramp right next to the hospital, so it was okay. Or so I thought.

Till I unzipped the Jeep window to get the ramp ticket. My window took grave offense at the cold and broke. I'll post a picture of the thing in a few minutes.

So, I was sullen when I got to the lab...sullen in the sense that I had already had been having a bad day and I'd been up just an hour. I was comforted a bit to see that I shared a floor with another phleb, and with the exception of one floor, we all had patient loads of less than 20. The other floor had over 40. So, we all knew we'd end up on that floor.

But, then my friend Anne piped up and said, "Oh, Sarah, you just go ahead and go help that floor instead of Kate...she won't mind."

Well, Kate DID mind. I'd already had a bad start to my day, and it was a big relief to me to see that I would have help on a difficult floor. Sure, I normally have no problem on that floor, but under the circumstances of the day, I wanted every advantage I could get! And, I'll readily admit that under a more "normal" day, I'd have been the first to say to have Sarah go help and I would do the floor myself.

But, what made me the angriest was that Anne took it upon herself to answer *for* me, without consulting me about it. I *hate* that.

So, when Anne looked expectantly at me, I snapped, "Kate DOES mind, but you all decide what you want to do." And I grabbed my tray and headed to work. Pretty soon, Sarah crept onto the floor to join me. "You made Anne feel really bad, Kate."

And, I'm proud of myself. I didn't go on a personal guilt trip for a change.

"I'm sorry, Sarah, that Anne feels bad, but Anne shouldn't have made decisions for me."

"She just thought it was a good way to get more help on 6 Carver."

"Yes, I understand that, Sarah, but if you're helping me on OUR floor, then we get done faster, then TWO of us can go help on that floor."

"Oh. I see what you mean, Kate."

DUH!

Anyway, Anne apologized and apologized when we got back to the lab. But, she wouldn't sit with me at break. So, it will be interesting to see if I've squashed a friendship, or if she was just embarrassed.

For those of you who are wondering about my post regarding checking into assisting the folks who put PICC lines in -

Would you believe that I haven't found a single soul who knows what department they work out of? When PICC's are ordered, they just order them on the computer and so through the miracle of modern IT they get ordered. One person thought it went through the Air Flight Nurses, another thought it was from Cardiology, another from Radiology. So, I'm on hold for the moment...when I have a way to proceed, I will. I haven't given up, just have no news to report!

I would have reacted exactly the same way, Kate. Geez I hope the rest of your week goes better, girl! Did you get that window fixed?

Peace to you, sister!

I'll post the picture of the window so you can see it - kept getting called away from the computer and didn't get it downloaded like I thought I would! I'll probably have to wait till payday to get it fixed; conveniently for such cold weather things, the place that can repair is not busy at this time of year, so I'll just have to coordinate so I can leave the Jeep with them for the day. It'll set me back $100 bucks or so, but the Jeep dealership was going to be a whole lot higher if I got it from them!

Hey! What happened to my post??? I KNOW I posted on this yesterday! Grrrrrr

I hate it when other people answer for me. Hubby does that from time to time and it just ticks me right off.

Bummer on the window. I didn't know those plastic windows would do that!
