Oh, that child of mine....

I'll preface this by saying that going to a "traditional" church can be an interesting experience as a Pagan. "New" Pagans seem to feel a lot of hatred toward mainstream religions initially, but after some time goes by, settle into the idea that we're all looking to some kind of Deity with only the form and format being different.

Once that happens, going to mainstream church services becomes interesting, for it's fun to look for the similarities in both Pagan ritual and other religious services.

So...today our family gathered to bid farewell to my aunt. Kirk, Marsha and I shared a pew along with my spouse and Kirk's sisters.

Maybe it's just that we've gotten used to the simplicity of Pagan ritual, but the Catholic funeral Mass seemed tedious today; it used to be so ritualistically beautiful and profound; today it seemed repetitive and long-winded.

For those of you who don't know, Pagan ritual includes something similar to communion which is called "cakes and ale" It supersedes Christian communion and its "body and blood" of Jesus.

So, when it came time to begin the communion rites, I waited for what seemed to be a very long time for the familiar words from my childhood to be spoken. The words were not forthcoming for a bit.

Kirk leans over to Marsha and I and whispers, "If he (the priest) doesn't get on with it, Jesus is going to get stale."

And, the three of us then struggled to keep from snorting and choking with laughter.

Oh, there was a lot of coughing and snorting and burying of heads in our hands! I had planned on going to communion out of respect for Ella and her faith, but after that comment, I just couldn't - I could imagine taking the host "body" and deciding it *was* stale and then laughing all the way back to the pew.

I'm sure Ella was just laughing her ass off, too. She knows Kirk's wacked out sense of humor and wouldn't have been in the least surprised. In fact, had it been someone else's funeral, she'd have repeated his comment to everyone!

That is very funny! I'd have had to have left the area for a bit just to regain composure! lol

Well, wouldn't you expect anything from a "desert religion" to be a bit on the dry, stale side?
Did the Druids use Glenlivet to moisten things up a bit? Well, they should have.
Good luck, Kate, good to see your blog back. No one could have told of your travails more engagingly.

Only you, Doug, would have thought of that desert religions/stale remark! That's funny!!!

Glenlivet instead of wine? I *like* that idea!!! And, now you've given me another story idea I'm going to have to muse about - probably have to talk to the Auld Scot about this one!

And, it's good to be back, even though it's not with any sort of regularity. But, eventually things might slow down.
