The ten p.m. news lead story was about the arrest of an area guy who is up on posession of child porn charges and is in the Linn Co. jail. He claims that his neighbor stole his hard drive and loaded the pictures on his computer - in effect, framing him.
Thing is, last week this guy tried to commit suicide, stating that the events of the last few months have been too much for him. And, what has happened to him in the last few months?
Well, his fiance's daughter, Evelyn Miller, disappeared from the family home while the mother was away at work. He claims he was asleep and the little girl slipped outside in the middle of the night. Sure, that's possible..but she was found several days later, murdered, in a nearby river. There's been an ongoing investigation, of course.
Yes, I'm being judgemental, but it certainly seems odd to me that a little girl disappears in the middle of the night, is found murdered, the fiance who is supposed to be watching her tries to do himself in, and then barely recovered from a botched-up wrist slashing, gets arrested on possesion of child porn? And then claims the neighbor stole his hard drive and embedded child porn pictures on it, effectively framing him? He literally said "My neighbor stole my hard drive...." not, the neighbor stole my computer. I'm no computer genius by any means, but wouldn't that mean that *his* computer wouldn't work any longer till the hard drive was reinstalled? How does one manage to steal a hard drive and reinstall it on the same computer without anyone noticing? If someone stole my computer or parts thereof, I think I'd have reported it to the authorities.
Some 'splainin' needs to be done here.

Insufficient data. I admit that it looks very bad, but let me present two things:
1: Many people have more than one hard drive - you COULD, theoretically, remove the data drive, load pics on it, and put it back. Which of course, requires two breakins and some minor tools to pull the case and drive, and it would require the homeowner not using anything on the data drive in the meantime...
2: It's possible that he doesn't use his machine every day - same issues as above, of course.
3: Why would his neighbor bother?

Hi Kate! Trace sent me over here, and I just got caught up reading your blog. Cool stuff! ;)
Sounds like a load of sh*t to me. I hope they find whomever hurt that little girl and that person gets visited by the karma monster REPEATEDLY.
Good points Orion...
Of course it's insufficient data at this point. This morning's paper didn't even give as much information as the TV news did last night. I don't know much about child porn laws, but apparently the guy was charged with...(grabbing the paper)..."'Frederiksen was charged with possession of child pornography for having images of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct on a computer hard drive manufactured outside Iowa.'"
I don't think I've ever seen a *federal* charge before, only like, possession of child porn. Anyway, it could also be inept reporting...who knows?
And, I am trying hard not to judge the guy, but sheesh, there are way too many odd things going on with this case.
Welcome, Jude! Welcome to the goofy brain O'Kate!
"'Frederiksen was charged with possession of child pornography for having images of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct on a computer hard drive manufactured outside Iowa.'"
It's probably a charge from Customs, too. I know a fellow that went to prison for 8 months on very similar charges before it was overturned in a higher court on the basis that the media having been shipped across state lines is like seizing a house for child porn because the nails were made in a different state. But they keep trying.
The fellow, who I believe was framed on the Child Porn charges, was never the same afterward, descending to darker and darker realms, with an increasing sense of invulnerability. He eventually pled guilty to kidnapping for a "scene" that had gone wrong and the guy did break through a window to get out -- right next to the unlocked door. However, they had him on Mann Act charges, so he pled. So he'll be out in 15 years instead of incarcerated for life. And this time, I think he deserved it.
