Lions and Tigers and Fat Shelties, oh MY!

Iowa Sheltie Rescue contacted me earlier this week about a Sheltie rescue that needed a foster home for a bit.

So, we picked her up today. Her name is Phoebe...and this dog is FAT FAT FAT! She's a tiny little sable; that is, she'd BE tiny if she didn't weigh 38 pounds!

Shelties can often have low thyroid. The lab results should be back tomorrow with the results of the test. If suspicions prove correct, she'll be put on medication. But, my heart is just breaking - this is a pup...only a year old!

She's got a whole lotta spunk and I'm really anxious to see what will come from a good diet, decent exercise and possibly medication to take that excess poundage off. She's not really sure of us yet, of course, nor would I expect her to be. But she seems well-mannered and housebroken and she didn't complain about going for a walk when we got home.

Yama was thrilled to have another dog in the house and we've had a lot of butt sniffing going on tonight. Now they're both sacked out on my office floor as I type.

I'll try to take some pictures of her over the weekend for you to see. I'd like to keep tracking her weight loss with those pictures, too. It will be fun to see what toys she likes and how she reacts to life in our household over the next few days.

Oh, and being the curious sort that I am, I asked what her "story" was - why was she put into rescue?

Well, it seems that her "people" adopted her as a pup, then found out they were expecting a child. Two-legged baby came along and they got rid of the four-legged baby because "everyone knows that when you have a baby you have to get rid of the dog."

What???? I'm glad I don't live in THAT world!

Can't wait to see the pics.

Have fun with her. I hope she brings you a lot of joy.

Sounds like she's going to be fun to have around. Hopefully you can get the excess weight off of her so she's healthy.

We had a four legged 'baby' when our two legged baby was born and we kept them both. I don't understand the philosophy that says you can't have one with the other.

Pictures would be great! I love having a 'face' to put with the names =)

Pics pics pics! :-)

I hope you can get Phoebe's weight down too, and it sounds like she's a darling to have around.

Yeah, what's with the mentality that you can't have a dog AND a baby?? Sheesh! All the poor animals out there who have a loving home and then suddenly get left out in the cold (so to speak but sometimes for real) and they didn't do anything wrong! It breaks my heart.
